Still Frozen? Put a Little Spring in Your Life Now!

I’ve had it with all the Polar Vortices and their impending snow-doom warnings. And now that I’m on maternity leave and cooped up in the house for the better part of the day – well, let's just say I needed a good dose of sunshine, so I headed to Goodwill®.

It’s Never Too Cold to Craft: Create a DIY Wall Garden

The bones of winter have gripped us hard this year, and my longing for spring becomes more urgent every day. As I type, 8 – 12 inches of fresh snow are softly covering up months-old layers from previous blizzards. To say that I’m ready for spring is an understatement! So, if I can’t see any green plant life outside, I might as well fix some up inside my home. Thus, a mini wall garden was born.

Keep Kids Entertained with DIY Games from Goodwill®

After agreeing to host my nephews and niece for a subzero winter overnight, I began to worry about the entertainment possibilities. I was determined that we wouldn’t spend the evening in front of the television, so I bundled up, got in the car and headed up to one of my favorite Goodwill® stores. I thought we could just do a craft of some kind. I would buy some wooden odds and ends and get out paint, glitter, glue, etc. The wood aisle at Goodwill always supplies my needs, so that’s where I headed. But right before my eyes, I spotted a shelf/coat hanger combination piece made from pine, that had three holes in one side. I didn’t spend time trying to figure out what it was used for in the past, but instantly thought of the possibility of making a Goodwill-sourced cornhole game. BINGO! Entertainment idea solved.

Déjà Vu Donations: When Well-Loved Items Hit Thrift Store Racks

Having been a thrifter and thrift store donor for so long-- and having met so many thrifters in my travels-- there's one question I often get: "Do you ever see stuff you've donated out for sale?" And the answer is pretty often, actually.

Ideas for Throwing an All-Thrifty Wedding

It’s common knowledge that weddings are expensive. But until I began planning my own, I didn’t realize how expensive. Stunned by the ridiculous sums I was facing, I proclaimed almost immediately that Ryan and my wedding would be thrifty and do-it-yourself. There is so much to think about from big things like location and menu to the little things that are easily overlooked (but can be surprisingly pricey) like tablecloths, ceremony programs and even cake cutting fees! Goodwill® to the rescue!

Lost Your Luggage? Replace Your Suitcase Contents for Less at Goodwill®

Hey guys, its Marisa from New Dress A Day here! It’s the holiday season, so that means there’s lots of travel going on. Suitcases get packed -- as do the flights home -- and sometimes those suitcases don’t make it to the final destination! I was inspired to craft this month’s post about what to do when it’s YOU who doesn’t see your suitcase on the carousel. One of my biggest nightmares is being the last one standing in the baggage claim area, watching the rest of my flight mates head out of the airport with their luggage, and then seeing the carousel stop, wondering, “But where’s my rolling suitcase?”

Here’s What This Year’s Second Annual Secondhand Sunday Had in Store

Earlier this month, freshly stuffed with turkey and cranberry sauce, millions of Americans mapped out their early Black Friday morning shopping strategies. Just hours after giving thanks for the things they already have, many of them huddled in tents on cold, hard, strip-mall sidewalks -- ironically -- to get more stuff. Not me. Last year’s first Secondhand Sunday had me looking forward to this year’s post-Thanksgiving trip to the thrift store even more.

Countdown to the Holidays with This Easy DIY Project

At this time of the year, everyone is counting down to something - Christmas, the New Year, Kwanzaa, etc. But rather than buying an advent calendar that may not exactly suit your celebration or décor style, why not make your own countdown? The holiday season has somehow evolved into a season about the stuff. I wanted a way to bring attention back to community-centered activities that represent the spirit of the holidays (like joining Goodwill in giving back!) So instead of putting toys or candies in my countdown, I’ve written out holiday activities that will allow my family to really enjoy this December.

Deconstruct a Skirt to Make These Great Plaid Pillows

Finding skirts and jackets made out of spectacular wool plaid at local thrift stores has become a hunt that I relish. Checking out women’s skirts and men’s sport coats for bright or unusual eye catching plaids is standard procedure. When something stands out, I hold it up and try to imagine it as a pillow, or even as ottoman fabric. Here’s a little secret I discovered a few years ago: pleated skirts have lots of fabric once you remove the waistband. When I came across this very short skirt, with the plaid on the diagonal, I knew it would be the perfect color and pattern for pillows.
